Full Project Detail:

Applications are invited for a doctoral researcher focusing on the development of data-driven modelling techniques to understand the operational performance of buildings.

With the digitisation of our energy system and the introduction of the internet of things, buildings are being sensed more than ever before. The data gathered from a fully sensed home or workplace could be used to develop bespoke calibrated models, or operational digital twins. The research challenge is determining what needs to be sensed, how many sensors need to be used, and at what time scale data needs to be collected to develop accurate representations.

This position will work towards discovering the trade-off between data availability and model accuracy using data collected from 20 highly sensed homes. The successful candidate will be working with a cohort of doctoral researchers using dynamic thermal modelling and optimization techniques to aid in the operation and design of the built environment.

Entry requirements:

Applicants should have, or expect to achieve, at least a 2:1 honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline. Applicants having a background in subjects relating to building energy use, mechanical or control engineering, data science, and computing science are particularly welcomed. A relevant master’s degree and/or employment experience will be an advantage.

Funding information:

The three-year studentship is intended to start in January 2020. It provides a tax-free stipend of £15,009 a year (2019/20 rates – stipend will rise in line with the level set by the Research Council) for the duration of the studentship plus tuition fees at the UK/EU rate. International students may apply but must be able to fund their own living costs as the studentship will cover international tuition fees only.
