Laser surface texturing is a fast-growing technique across all industrial sectors to functionalize materials properties and improve products lifetime. Because of the multiple field of applicability for this technology, no single solution is remotely feasible. Most studies have focused on a top-down approach, where laser texturing parameters are trialled, and the resulting surfaces analysed to assess their properties. This approach fails to respond to the fast-evolving technology adoption needs. Through the identification of a set of design rules based on the underpinning mechanisms for laser functionalization, this project will enhance operational capability by novel processing techniques of substrates. Direct exposure to industry relevant projects, both internally within TWI but also EU-funded research projects. The student will be supervised by at least one staff member from TWI with experience of doctoral programmes, plus supervision from Loughborough University. Regular progress meetings held either at TWI or Loughborough University will ensure the student is guided adequately through the PhD and has the resources required for success.

Applicants should have, or expect to achieve, at least a 2:1 Honours degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering, Material Science or a related subject. A relevant Master’s degree and/or experience in one or more of the following will be an advantage: Optics and lasers, Advanced Processes and Technologies, Surface chemistry
Funded in partnership by the Wolfson School and TWI Global, if awarded, this studentship provides a 3-year tax-free stipend of £15,009 per annum, plus tuition fees at the UK/EU rate (currently £4,327 p/a). While we welcome applications from non-EU nationals, please be advised that it will only be possible to fund the tuition fees at the international rate and no stipend will be available.
