The University of Exeter’s College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences, in partnership with the Synopsys Simpleware Product Group (https://www.synopsys.com/simpleware.html), is inviting applications for a fully-funded PhD studentship to commence in November 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter. For eligible students, the studentship will cover UK/EU tuition fees plus an annual tax-free stipend of at least £15,009 for 3.5 years full-time, or pro rata for part-time study. The student would be based in Exeter in the College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences at the Streatham Campus in Exeter.

Project Description:

This is an exciting opportunity to carry out a PhD Research Degree with an open remit working closely with a team of researchers within the Simpleware Product Group at Synopsys (https://www.synopsys.com/simpleware.html). The Simpleware Product Group develops and markets innovative tools for advanced image processing, including the use of image data for carrying out physics-based simulations for both medical and industrial applications. Within this rapidly expanding area at the interface between medical imaging and engineering, there are a number of different projects of interest to the academic and industrial stakeholders.

Depending on their interests, candidates could pursue research paths including:

  1. Use of Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning for segmentation of image data
  2. Development of techniques for computer modelling across length scales, e.g. for soils, for soft and hard tissue structures (bones, skin…), for foams etc…

The proposed PhD is structured to be very open to the interests of the candidate.

Other tasks you will carry out:

  • To write and maintain accurate records of the research being undertaken.
  • To prepare publications and research presentations with guidance and advice.
  • To communicate and present research results within the research group, at meetings, through research paper publications and other recognized avenues as appropriate.
  • To provide technical advice in relation of the research and the techniques used to other staff members within the wider research team.
  • To take part in knowledge-transfer activities, including collaborative meetings with other research groups.
