The University of Manchester

Applications for September 2019 are now closed and we will open the application process again for entry in September 2020 in November 2019.

EPSRC CDT in Science and Applications of Graphene and Related Nanomaterials (Graphene NOWNANO)

Graphene NOWNANO Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) builds on the world-leading expertise in the science and technology of graphene and other two-dimensional (2D) materials at Manchester and Lancaster Universities to offer a broad interdisciplinary PhD programme. CDT students receive initial state-of-the-art training in fundamentals of graphene/2D materials, their applications, and key techniques. This is followed by a 3½ year research project you will select from up to 30 available projects in top-rated research groups across 9 disciplines/university departments (Experimental and Theoretical Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science, Materials Science, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Pharmacy, Biomaterials, Nanotechnology for Medicine).

We offer:

  • World-class research in graphene and other 2D materials, their science and applications, including:
    • Experimental and theoretical physics of nanodevices based on 2D materials;
    • 2D heterostructures: materials on demand;
    • Synthesis, fabrication, characterisation and modelling of 2D materials;
    • Applications of graphene and other 2D materials in electronics, photonics, spintronics, electrochemistry, composites, filtration and separation, drug delivery, regenerative medicine, and other new and developing areas.
  • Vibrant interdisciplinary environment
  • Network of fellow scientists (over 60 students)
  • 6-month training in fundamentals of 2D materials and research techniques to prepare for challenging research projects
  • Training in innovation and commercialization of research
  • Network of industrial partners
  • Fully funded secondments in industry or partner research institutions
  • Public engagement activities led by the students

The CDT is based at the University of Manchester in partnership with Lancaster University and research projects are available at both partner institutions.

We are looking for:

Graduates with a strong degree (first or high upper second) in science, engineering or bio-medical disciplines looking for a challenging research project in an interdisciplinary environment. Fully-funded places are available to UK nationals and a small number of studentships available to EU nationals. International students are welcome to apply provided they have their own funding.
