PhD Studentship for Cloud, IoT and Big-Data Protection (Fixed Term Contract up to 4 Years)

Project Description:

One Full PhD Studentship industry based, Duration: up to 4 years

The Huawei German Research Centre in Munich is responsible for advanced technical research, architecture evolution design and strategic technical planning. The Cyber Security and Privacy Lab is developing cutting-edge technologies, which are designed for supporting data protection and accountability in the Cloud, IoT and cloud-based networks.

Due to the recent growth in the cyber security area Huawei research centre in Munich is recruiting one full-time PhD student to research on some next generation security challenges.

Main Responsibilities

The PhD candidate will contribute to the research and development of cloud data protection technologies for cloud system, mobile or IoT and devices. The candidate has the opportunity to work on real world problems and improve data protection and accountability of Huawei future’s products and services. 

Topic 1: Research in improving dynamic authorization building on Attribute-based Access Control approaches for Big Data, Cloud and IoT (Internet of Things).

Topic 2: Research in improving dynamic authorization and usage control for current (e.g. Android) and new mobile device and media pad operating systems and smart applications.

Topic 3: Research in advance policy management, policy editing, policy evaluation, policy evaluation simulation, symbolic execution and impact analysis of dynamic authorization policies for Attribute Based Access control and Usage Control policies. 

Topic 4: Research on innovative algorithms in the field of Distributed Ledger, Blockchain and Smart-Contract technologies in order to improve the secure sharing, analysis and validation of information such as data access logs or security incident reports.

Entry Requirements

  • Completed BSc Hons or MSc (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Information Technology, Electrical Engineering, or Mathematics;
  • Interest in one of the following: a) big-data architectures and technologies (such as Hadoop) and the associated security frameworks; b) IoT and smart home automation systems; c) mobile device operating systems and smart apps; d) cloud data / application service platforms such as AWS, S3, Openstack, SWIFT, Azure and protection technologies for private or public cloud.
  • Demonstrated affinity with device, data and/or application protection and security development technologies;
  • Exposure and understanding of data and system protection technologies including policy-based access control (preferably Attribute Based Access Control – ABAC), mobile device operating system controls and data encryption;
  • Passion for finding solutions for complex technological issues;
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills;
  • Self-starting and self-motivating, willing to take initiatives and feel the responsibility for your project;
  • Good programming skill in Go, Rust, C/C++, Java, Python or similar programming platforms.
  • Fluent in English.

Must be eligible to work in the European Union to be considered for this position. For UK Universities the candidate must be British national or national of another EU member state.
