Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research position starting on 15 October 2019 (or soon thereafter if a later start is required by the successful applicant) to develop advanced controllers and state estimators for next generation electric vehicles.

The post is part of a collaborative project that aims to develop new control systems and components for fully electric vehicles. A budget for travel and other expenses will be provided, and there will be several opportunities to attend related conferences. The research will be carried out with collaborators of several industrial and academic institutions. The project outcomes will be evaluated on state-of-the-art vehicle demonstrators.

The successful candidate must have a strong background in vehicle dynamics and control theory and should be a holder of a PhD degree in one of the areas of mechanical engineering, control systems engineering, automotive engineering or electrical engineering. Also, expertise in the following areas is highly desirable:

  • Vehicle dynamics simulation;
  • Wheel slip control;
  • State estimation based on Luenberger observers and Kalman filters.

The appointee will join Surrey’s Centre for Automotive Engineering of the Mechanical Engineering Sciences Department, which has research interests in a wide range of topics, including active vehicle dynamics, tyre dynamics, electric powertrains, vehicle aerodynamics and novel transmission systems for electric and hybrid electric vehicles.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact Professor Aldo Sorniotti (tel: +44 (0)1483 689688, email a.sorniotti@surrey.ac.uk) for further information.
