Full Project Detail:

The fashion textiles and related technology industry is calling for innovative research-led solutions to support business growth, as well as sustainable design and development.  Approximately 80% of this sector comprise of small firms operating in fashion design, designer-making, manufacturing, textile, product, and medical design.

An exciting opportunity exists to undertake a detailed programme of work with the aim of innovating knowledge transfer in the fashion textiles and related technology industry through the use of sustainable design and textiles waste management. The aim of the research is to identify ecosystems that facilitate circular economy with a focus on synthetic and functional materials and applications. The research project should review the circular design, materials, sports apparel or any related activity as a case study. Reduce waste, extend the life and value of synthetic and performance materials through recycling, reprocessing and repurposing are some of the strategies that are encouraged.

For this exciting opportunity applicants are requested to submit a one-page (A4-sized) proposal outlining their vision for the three-year studentship, with clear emphasis on a specific application (fashion, protection, sports technology, etc.), and approaches.

While based within the School of Design and Creative Arts, the successful candidate will be expected to work alongside colleagues within Business and Engineering Schools, as well as research and enterprise partners within a larger Arts & Humanities Research Council (AHRC) project – project reference ‘AH/S002804/1’.  The student will also join the Textile Design Research Group.
