About the team/job

EMBL is looking for an experienced and motivated communications professional to lead its stakeholder engagement activities in the Communications Team - within the area of Strategy and Communications at EMBL. You will lead a talented team that engages with a wide variety of stakeholder communities that are important to EMBL. Activities of the team include: managing EMBL’s international press relations, social media channels, internal communications and engagement with and outreach to communities close to EMBL's six sites, for example by organising tours, open days and various other outreach initiatives.

You will ensure that a variety of stakeholder groups are well served by us and you will feed back insights and requests from various communities, internal and external, to the rest of the team. To achieve this, you will work closely with the Head of Communications and the three other Team Leads (Content, Design and Digital). 

Your role

  • Leading and mentoring the engagement team
  • Increasing EMBL’s external visibility and reputation through the coordination of press relations, social media presence, and the organisation of outreach events
  • Increasing the cohesion, pride and connectedness of EMBL’s distributed communities through the coordination of internal communications
  • Ensuring that the communications needs of EMBL's sites in Barcelona, Grenoble, Hamburg and Rome are integrated into the work of the Communications team
  • Overseeing the planning, design and implementation of the Visitor Experience that will be hosted in the EMBL Imaging Centre, with the goal of opening EMBL up to the public
  • Developing, executing and assessing mixed media campaigns for EMBL’s communications channels
  • Advising senior stakeholders on topics like crisis communications and media interviews 

You have

We are looking for a professional with an open attitude, the drive to deliver projects and excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

To succeed in this role, you will need to have:

  • A passion for science
  • Ideally several years of experience in science communications roles, preferably including international media relations, social media and public outreach activities
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships across a large organisation
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to communicate confidently and clearly about complex scientific and political (internal) issues
  • Strong analytical and project management skills
  • Experience of managing third-party contractors

An excellent command of spoken and written English is necessary.

This role will involve occasional travel to all of EMBL’s sites. 

You might also have

  • Knowledge of other languages, particularly German, French, Italian or Spanish, is also advantageous.
  • Experience working in an international environment is an asset.
