Applications are invited for a two-year Postdoctoral Research Associate position in machine learning, with a focus on computer vision and natural language processing applications on social media. This post is in the context of the “Early Detection of Fake News over Arabic Social Media” project. This is a collaborative project between the University of Edinburgh (PI is Dr. Walid Magdy), Qatar University (PI is Dr. Tamer Elsayed), and AlJazeera Network as the industrial partner. The candidate will be based at Edinburgh University, but will be collaborating remotely with the team in Qatar with potential multiple visits during the project period.
The role will involve the detection of fake news spread on the Arabic social media, with a specific focus on the spread of unauthentic “images”. It is required to detect if the image appearing within a social media post is original or manipulated, and what kind of manipulation is applied. In addition, if the image is not manipulated, it is required to find whether it is original with that piece of news or copied from an old event. Candidate is required to use image processing features in conjunction with textual and network features from the social media post to reach a final decision about the credibility of the news. In addition, the candidate will get support on the textual features from the team in Qatar. Another phase of the project includes analyzing the spread of fake news on social media and detecting its origin.
The post is full time, fixed-term and is available from February 2020 for 24 months.
Informal enquiries directed to Dr Walid Magdy (firstname.lastname@example.org).
Salary Grade: UE07 (£33,797 - £40,322).
