The School of Humanities and Social Science (HSS) HSS has two missions. First, HSS provides university core curriculum for all students, including general education, English language competency, Chinese cultural heritage and language competency, physical education, basic competency in information technology (IT) applications.

Beyond the university core curriculum, HSS intends to develop to become a school of excellence in humanities and social sciences, and to provide high-quality programmes in multiple areas at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, including, but not limited to, translation & interpreting studies, simultaneous interpreting, applied psychology, international affairs & international relations (global studies), internet and new media, advanced English communication, urban studies, educational studies, sociological studies. The University recruits first-class faculty members from around the world, and we welcome high caliber faculty of diverse background from around the world to join us and establish a top-tier School of Humanities and Social Science in China.    

Positions and Qualifications

The School of Humanities and Social Science at CUHK(SZ) invites applicants for a faculty position in the broad area of Chinese culture (specialization areas including, but not limited to China studies, Chinese history, Chinese literature, Chinese Religions, etc. ), at the rank of full professor/associate professor level with prospect for tenure, although junior candidate with very competitive academic records may be considered for the position of assistant professor. Candidates with exceptionally outstanding records may be considered for the Chair Professorship with tenure. Candidate should have (i) a PhD degree (by the time of reporting duty) in relevant areas of Chinese culture; and (ii) evidence of high potential for excellence in teaching and scholarship. 

Candidates for the associate and full professor position are expected to have solid evidence of excellence in teaching/research/service, and a strong track record of sustained high-quality research/scholarship outcomes in the expertise area(s), as evidenced by research publications in competitive international outlets in the relevant areas of Chinese culture. In addition, candidates need to demonstrate academic leadership and strong commitment to the highest standard of excellence. The successful applicant is expected to be able to teach a range of courses in core areas of Chinese culture. Experience in supervising postgraduate students will be favorably considered. 

Appointment will normally be made on contract basis for up to three years initially, leading to longer-term appointment or tenure later, subject to successful performance evaluation and mutual agreement. In cases where a candidate has an established record of excellence and demonstrable potential for continued success, tenure may be offered to the candidate at the time of initial appointment.

The appointee is expected to commence work in the academic year 2019-20. 

Salary and Fringe Benefits 

Salary will be competitive, commensurate with experience and academic accomplishments. Appointments will be made under the establishment of CUHK, Shenzhen and statutory benefits will be provided according to the prevailing labor laws applicable to the PRC. The appointee will be based in Shenzhen, China.
