The Interdisciplinary Global Development Centre (IGDC) is an interdisciplinary centre for research, teaching and partnership. The IGDC aims to meet development challenges through research that spans traditional disciplinary and sectoral demands. It is led by the Departments of Politics, Environment and Geography, and History and has members from the Faculties of Science, Social Science and Arts and Humanities. Students on the IGDC’s PhD in Global Development programme will benefit from bespoke training in interdisciplinary approaches to global development and have supervisors from two departments in order to encourage interdisciplinary approaches to major global challenges. The programme will provide training in different sets of methodologies, such as quantitative methods, including original data collection and secondary data analysis, and qualitative methods including interviews, focus groups, media analysis and archival data, that will enable students to bring wider expertise to bear on global development challenges. We value and encourage partnership with relevant external organisations, though this is not a necessary component of the programme.

We encourage applications from outstanding candidates who are committed to tackling major global challenges, using interdisciplinary perspectives. Successful applicants will join and contribute to the vibrant research community within the IGDC.  We are particularly keen on supporting PhD projects that fit within our research priorities:

  • Society and economy
  • Health and wellbeing
  • People and environment

We offer one full-time 3-year scholarship, covering UK/EU level tuition fees, a maintenance allowance of £15,009 (current rate)  and a small research allowance.
