The Department of Zoology is looking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Assistant to carry out population genetic analyses on genes controlling cooperative behaviours in bacteria.
This project will apply population genetic theory and analysis methods to patterns of genomic variation, both within and across bacterial species. Patterns will be compared between (social) cooperative traits, that are likely to be favoured by kin selection, and private traits, that provide a direct benefit. Patterns will also be compared between different types of (social) cooperative traits.
The project will be based upon population genetic theory, which has predicted that if a trait is favoured because of kin selected benefits to others, then selection is relaxed. Consequently, beneficial alleles are less likely to fix, and deleterious alleles are more likely to be maintained/fix (Linksvayer and Wade. 2009. Evolution 63: 1685–1696; Van Dyken and Wade. 2012. Am Nat 179: 436–45).
The postholder will identify candidate genes, compile genomic databases, and carry out population genetic analyses.
The postholder will report to Stuart West and Melanie Ghoul. They will join a research group working on social evolution and cooperation more broadly. The postholder will provide guidance to less experienced members of the research group, including PhD and project students.
Applicants must hold a relevant PhD (or be near to completion), with relevant experience. In particular, population genetic analysis experience is required.
This post is fixed-term for 36 months.
