University of Birmingham - School of Chemistry

Qualification Type: PhD
Location: Birmingham
Funding for: UK Students, EU Students
Funding amount: Not Specified
Hours: Full Time
Placed On: 3rd February 2020
Expires: 3rd May 2020

A funded PhD studentship is available in the group of Prof. Andrew Dove at the University of Birmingham (group website: http://www.dovegrouplab.com). The project will focus on the development of catalytic systems that are able to depolymerise plastics in order that waste plastic may ultimately be chemically recycled into virgin material, or upcycled into new added-value products. The project will involve research in some or all of the key areas that the group are interested:

  • Development of catalysts for depolymerisation of plastics
  • Understanding and tuning the product distribution based on reaction conditions and catalyst choice
  • Investigating potential applicability of the depolymerised materials

The project will involve several areas that can be tuned towards the successful applicant’s interests and skills and will be ideal for students that are interested in a fundamental research project with an applied goal. The work will be conducted in the recently refurbished lab space that the Dove group occupy in the Haworth Building in Edgbaston with full access to the world-class, state-of-the-art facilities maintained by the group and department.

These studentships are only open to UK or EU nationals. The successful applicants should possess a good (1st or 2.1 UK or equivalent) degree in chemistry from a well-regarded institution.

Enquiries and informal applications should include a C.V. and be made as soon as possible to Prof. Andrew Dove (a.dove@bham.ac.uk).
