Applications are invited to work on a double PhD between the Universities of Nottingham and Birmingham, in the field of infrastructure management, digital twins, and gamification. We aim to explore the automation of road maintenance decisions by creating digital twins of roads that simulate traffic, pavement degradation and maintenance activities. Also, we want to optimise the selection and timing of maintenance activities using artificial intelligence algorithms.

The successful candidate will have an excellent opportunity to do research on traffic microsimulations, pavement degradation models, work with computer games developers, and explore some of the most advanced artificial intelligence techniques in order to take optimised decisions for the maintenance of roads.

We are looking for a person that is enthusiastic, likes engineering challenges, and has fun playing computer games and even developing them. We offer an excellent environment and ample opportunity for travelling. After successful completion of the Thesis, the candidate will obtain two PhD degrees, from the University of Nottingham and the University of Birmingham.

Candidates must hold a good honours degree or equivalent in an engineering or numerical science topic or be able to demonstrate equivalent experience.

This is a 3-year programme. This position is available immediately and applications will be open until filled.
