Applicants are invited for a Research Associate in Digital Twin Design and Visualisation at the Imagination Lab in Lancaster University’s Institute for Contemporary Arts.
You will conduct research within the EPSRC funded ‘Chatty Factories’ project (EP/R021031/1), which is a collaboration between Lancaster University, Cardiff, Bath, Nottingham and Edinburgh. The Chatty Factories project investigates how the combination of Internet-of-Things technologies, robotic fabrication, and data-driven design tools can transform and enhance traditional product design cycles. In this project we are collaborating closely with Atherton Bikes, a cutting edge UK-based company dedicated to the design and manufacture of top-end downhill racing bikes.
This role will explore ‘digital twin-driven product design’ through the design, prototyping and testing of digital twinning technologies that seek to supercharge existing design processes associated with downhill racing bikes. By visualizing novel streams of product-use data that can be interacted with by designers, the project aims to identify opportunities for design improvement and innovation that can be tested in collaboration with the team at Atherton Bikes.
In this role, you will be working closely with colleagues at Edinburgh and Cardiff Universities who will be responsible for collecting and processing the product-use data associated with downhill racing using a combination of sensor data, “entangled ethnography”, and Machine Learning.
Your responsibility will be to develop and test interactive digital tools, in collaboration with Atherton Bikes, to channel, navigate and explore these novel data streams to help create higher performance downhill racing bikes tailored for specific riders, track types, and conditions.
This is an exciting role that offers significant growth potential for the right candidate. This is a 1.0 FTE fixed term appointment until 30 June 2021 in the first instance.
