The School of Electronics, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EEECS) and the Institute of Electronics, Communications and Information Technology (ECIT) at Queen’s University Belfast are setting up an Edge Computing Hub that is funded by Rakuten Mobile, Japan.

Edge computing is a novel paradigm that will make the expansion of devices and sensors in the Internet-of-Things era sustainable. The vision is to harness computing across resources from conventional cloud data centres towards the edge of the network on telco edge platforms and micro clouds. Running applications across both the cloud and the edge will make them more responsive, thereby improving the overall Quality-of-Service.
Multiple challenges need to be addressed for making edge computing practical. Some of these include, delivering edge resource services seamlessly and securely when faced with a large volume of heterogeneous resources, and managing end-to-end activities of edge applications that are massively distributed.
Applications are invited from future leaders of any nationality to join our vibrant and multi-cultural team as a Research Fellow for addressing any relevant challenges and leading the activities of the Hub.
The successful candidate will have substantial opportunities to build their career, including training in innovation, commercialisation and soft skills, travelling to research conferences, and internships with Rakuten Mobile in Japan.
