Overview

The School of Electronics, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and the Institute of Electronics, Communications and Information Technology (ECIT) at Queen’s University Belfast are setting up an Edge Computing Hub that is funded by Rakuten Mobile, Japan.

Edge computing is a novel paradigm that will make the expansion of devices and sensors in the Internet-of-Things era sustainable. The vision is to harness computing across resources from conventional cloud data centres towards the edge of the network on telco edge platforms and micro clouds. Running applications across both the cloud and the edge will make them more responsive, thereby improving the overall Quality-of-Service.

Multiple challenges need to be addressed for making edge computing practical. Some of these include, delivering edge resource services seamlessly and securely when faced with a large volume of heterogeneous resources, and managing end-to-end activities of edge applications that are massively distributed.

One UK/EU studentship are available for exceptional PhD applicants to join our team for addressing any relevant challenges and shaping the activities of the Hub. There will be opportunities for training in innovation, commercialisation and soft skills, for attending research conferences, and for internships with Rakuten Mobile at Japan.

Closing date for applications is 30 June 2020.

Anticipated start date: July 2020 or thereafter.

Eligibility Criteria:

Applications from aspiring leaders of any nationality who have or shortly expect to obtain a first class undergraduate (including integrated Masters) degree or MSc distinction (or international equivalent) in computer science or engineering are encouraged. Enthusiasm for research in distributed systems (Cloud/Fog/Edge), an ability to think and work independently, excellent analytical skills and strong verbal and written communication skills are essential requirements. Experience of programming is essential.

Eligibility for both fees and maintenance (approximately £15,000) depends on the applicant being either an ordinary UK resident or an EU resident who has lived permanently in the UK for the 3 years immediately preceding the start of the studentship. Non-UK residents who hold EU residency may also apply, but if successful may receive fees only.

Applications must include:

  • A complete Curriculum Vitae that includes information on educational background, projects developed or contributed to (any links to software repositories), technical and non-technical skills, any publications/presentations, and any other relevant items.
  • A Research Proposal of no longer than two sides of a A4 sheet of paper that includes a potential title, objectives, methodology, expected output (software/publication plans), your experience in the proposed area, ways in which you will contribute to the Edge Computing Hub. A generic proposal will be considered ineligible.
  • Names and contact details of two referees.
  • Degree transcripts to date.
