Professor in Educational Work with a focus on Preschool and School-age Educare

Job description
The successful applicant will provide scientific leadership for those active in the research field. Duties include developing the research environment at the department through planning and management of research projects, and initiating and managing work with applications for external research funding, for himself/herself and others. The professor is expected to conduct research, to lead seminars and to supervise doctoral students, as well as to work to enhance the academic field.

The job also includes providing information on research and development work and developing collaboration with both the national and the international research community. In addition to supervision and research, the position also includes teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level and may also include various coordination and management tasks. The place of work is Umeå, and applicants are expected to actively participate in the department's activities and to become involved in its activities.

Eligibility
To be eligible, applicants must demonstrate both research and teaching expertise in accordance with Chapter 4, Section 3 of the Higher Education Ordinance (HF) and the Appointment Procedure for teaching staff at Umeå University.

Research expertise includes independent research efforts, the ability to plan and manage research and the ability to communicate research with the surrounding community. 

Teaching expertise includes documented experience of planning, implementation, examination and evaluation of teaching and a demonstrated reflective approach to students' learning and the teacher’s role.

Assessment criteria
The assessment is based on the degree of expertise required for employment eligibility, i.e. research and teaching expertise. In addition, the assessment will take into account leadership expertise.

At Umeå University, teachers are generally assessed based on their ability to collaborate, as well as other competence and aptitude needed to perform the job.

Research expertise means independent research production. The assessment criteria include breadth and depth in research - quality and scope, originality in research, productivity, contributions to the international scientific community, ability to obtain external research funding and interaction with the surrounding community.

Teaching expertise means documented experience of teaching on a scientific basis at university level and also includes a reflective approach to students’ learning as well as the teacher’s role. The assessment criteria include the ability to plan, implement and evaluate teaching, to vary forms of teaching and examination, to supervise and examine students, to participate in educational development work and to interact with the surrounding community in planning and implementing education.

Leadership expertise means the ability to develop and manage operations and personnel, to make decisions, to take responsibility and to coordinate, motivate and provide others with the conditions necessary to effectively achieve common goals. Other examples of demonstrated expertise are the ability to plan and lead groups as well as help to create commitment, participation and job satisfaction as well as the ability to manage conflicts.

Equal consideration shall be given to the assessment of teaching expertise and to the assessment of research expertise.

Balance between assessment bases
When selecting among eligible applicants, the emphasis will be primarily on research and teaching expertise, and in particular research expertise. In addition, the degree of leadership expertise involving development and management of operations and personnel will be taken into account.

A clear and visionary development plan for enhancing the academic field and how this work will be developed in the short and long term is particularly meritorious.

When assessing research expertise, special emphasis will be placed on research achievements with a focus on preschool or school-age educare.
