Project description: Plastics have wide range of uses and several advantages over traditional materials. However, the huge quantities of plastics that we are using is creating an environmental and economic problems. It is getting more and more important to obtain plastic materials sourced from sustainable chemicals as well as studying their degradation mechanisms to improve the recycling properties. We have reported a very detailed literature review (Polym. Chem. 2015, 6, 4497-4559) on the use of chemicals sustained from lignocellulosic biomass. This PhD project will focus on inventing new sustainable sources, functional polymers and discovering new polymeric materials with ideal thermal, mechanical and degradation properties that can replace traditional polymers.
This funded studentship is open to UK/EU nationals, covers all tuition fees and provides an annual tax-free stipend of ca. £15,000 for 3 years. Applications must have excellent synthetic chemistry and analytical skills and, before starting the project, hold an honours degree (at least II.1 or equivalent) in Chemistry, or other relevant discipline.
