The German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA) / Leibniz-Institut für Globale und Regionale Studien is an independent social-science research institute based in Hamburg. It analyses political, social, and economic developments in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East, and links this knowledge to questions of global significance. It combines region-specific analysis with innovative comparative research on accountability and participation, growth and development, peace and security, and power and ideas. Postdoctoral Research Fellow 

Applications are invited for a full-time position, with a contract of 24 months, ideally starting 1 August 2020 (conditional on funding from the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development). The salary is commensurate with TV-AVH / TVöD EG 14

The successful candidate will lead and coordinate the GIGA’s contribution to a research network on “Sustainable Global Supply Chains” that will be established by the GIGA (in its Research Programme “Growth and Development”) together with the German Development Institute, the Kiel Institute for the World Economy and the Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik. The aim of this new network is to synthesise, process, and mobilise existing knowledge for the evidence-based design of sustainable supply chains. The network also aims to generate new policy-relevant insights, for example on the impacts of sustainability standards/due diligence on trade, investment, and firms. 

Tasks will include:

  • Own applied research on global supply chains (about 50% of the time) and contributions to network publications (reports, policy briefs, blogs, etc.)
  • Leading and coordinating the GIGA’s contribution to the network; collaborating with network partners for the establishment and consolidation of the network
  • Mobilising and leveraging contributions from the network for the content of the network website
  • Coordination of a special issue in a renowned development journal on sustainable supply chains, including the coordination of a call for commissioned research papers 

Candidate qualifications:

  • Outstanding doctorate in economics, political science, or other social sciences
  • Expertise/relevant publications on global supply chains/value chains
  • Experience in knowledge transfer
  • Expertise in one or more of GIGA’s research regions
  • Relevant academic record demonstrated by publications in renowned peer-reviewed journals and/or leading publishing houses
  • Excellent methodological skills (quantitative and/or qualitative)
  • English-language proficiency; German is an asset
