The Hertie School is recruiting a Professor or Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Public Policy. We are looking for a scholar who can combine state-of-the-art research in data science, machine learning or artificial intelligence with an interest in the social sciences and public policy. The successful candidate will contribute to core machine learning and deep learning teaching in the School’s new MSc Data Science for Public Policy programme. The Hertie School strongly encourages applications from women and underrepresented minorities.

Applicants for this position must have a PhD in any area of artificial intelligence, computer science, machine learning, natural language processing, or a related discipline (or expect to have this degree by the start of employment). We are interested in early career scholars in particular, although more advanced candidates will be considered. An early career candidate will be appointed as Assistant Professor with a six-year clock (two three-year contracts) with the possibility of tenure. A more advanced candidate would be subject to a two-year probationary period before the granting of tenure.  The expected start date is Academic Year 2021-22.

The Hertie School seeks faculty with demonstrated capacity for research at the highest levels in their discipline, through an established record of publication in top outlets. We recruit faculty who will create a climate that embraces excellence and diversity with a strong commitment to high-quality teaching and innovative research of interest to the international scholarly community and policy-makers.

Candidates are expected to work well in an interdisciplinary, international environment with English as the language of instruction and operation. This position will be based in the School’s Data Science Lab, but collaboration with new centres of competence of the Hertie School is encouraged. Those are the Jacques Delors Centre Berlin, the Centre for International Security Policy, the Centre for Fundamental Rights, the Centre for Sustainability, and the Centre for Digital Governance.
