Applications are sought for a prestigious 3-year fellowship within the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Nottingham. The Pope Fellowship was endowed by Sir Joseph Pope, formerly Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Nottingham, and aims to support seminal work in the general field of Mechanical Engineering. Candidates for this position should hold an excellent first degree in mechanical engineering from a reputable University, a PhD in an aspect of Mechanical Engineering and should ideally have had at least two years of post-doctoral experience in the same field with a track record of high quality publication. Successful applicants to the Pope Fellowship are able to transition to a full time academic post at the end of the fellowship (subject to performance).

This post requires expertise in some area of mechanical engineering and a focus on high power density machines and/or the behaviour of highly stressed contacts is especially desirable. Experience of wear, fretting and contact fatigue disciplines would be advantageous. The candidate should have an excellent background in experimental testing and the processing and interpretation of experimental results. The development of novel material testing apparatus will be a significant element of this new role. He/she should also be comfortable with advanced numerical modelling, having experience of finite element analysis and other analytical methods for the stress analysis of contact problems. Excellent communication skills are imperative. As this is a transitional post, the candidate should be able to exhibit evidence of excellent teaching within the Mechanical Engineering discipline.

The successful applicant will sit within the Gas Turbines and Transmissions Research Centre (G2TRC) in the Faculty of Engineering and will be expected to interact strongly with the University’s major initiative on “Propulsion Futures” – becoming the main mechanical engineering expert informing that initiative.

  • The opportunity to spend periods of time at University of Nottingham Campuses in China and Malaysia.

Eligibility: Candidates for this position should hold an excellent first degree in mechanical engineering and a PhD in one of our identified (or other relevant) areas of interest. Post-doctoral experience is a relevant field is an advantage.
