A cross-disciplinary team of researchers from the Universities of York and Sheffield are working together on an exciting new EPSRC-funded project, MARCH (Magnetic Architectures for Reservoir Computing Hardware), to design and use magnetic materials as embodied reservoir computers, developing novel multi-reservoir architectures, and applying them to real world tasks including robot control.
Such devices have been demonstrated in the individual small scale. Our aim is to develop scaled-up embodied Reservoir Computing (RC), including a new design methodology and hardware platform for multi-reservoir devices, that can be exploited to design low power, robust, flexible, and efficient smart sensing and other ‘edge-computing’ devices in a diverse range of materials.
We are recruiting outstanding postdoctoral researchers in Unconventional Computing, Electronic Systems Engineering, and Magnetic Materials Science, to work with us on the leading edge research needed to achieve the MARCH project’s ambitious objectives.
- Design and implement UComp interfacing techniques, focussing on interfacing magnetic reservoir components to sensors, actuators, other reservoirs, and training data sources.
- Collaborate with the computer and material science researchers to develop hardware-efficient input/output layers to make UComp substrates with high I/O count usable.
- Collaborate with the other project researchers to develop the demonstrator applications
- Conduct research and contribute to the production of research
- Assist in the identification and development of potential areas of research and the development of proposals for independent or collaborative research projects
- Assist with undergraduate teaching (Grade 6 only)
- Analyse research data
- Write up research results and disseminate results through publications, seminars, conference presentations and public engagement and outreach activities
Additional Grade 7 duties include:
- Participate in the planning and management of research projects, including supervising the work of others and providing expert advice
- Contribute to and/or lead the obtaining of external research funding
- Contribute to the public understanding of research and scholarship
Skills, Experience & Qualifications needed
Both Grade 6 and 7 post holders:
- PhD, or equivalent research experience, in Computer Science, Electronic Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or similar technical area
- Excellent knowledge and skills in embedded electronic systems development, including specification, design, programming (C or equivalent) and testing.
- Excellent skills in digital systems engineering, including simulation, HDL and SoC/FPGA.
- Desire to work in a cross-disciplinary team
- Interest in unconventional computing architecture
- Knowledge of signal transduction (A2D, D2A), measurement and skills in sensor interfacing
- Knowledge and skills in printed circuit board (PCB) design
- Knowledge of Artificial Neural Networks and/or Reservoir Computing
- Experience of carrying out both independent and collaborative research
- Knowledge of a range of research techniques and methodologies
- Collaborative ethos
Additionally required for Grade 7:
- Has research expertise in an area that will complement and enhance the department's research strategy and goals
- Highly developed communication skills both orally and in writing
- Experience of undertaking publicly evidenced high quality research
- Willingness to work proactively with colleagues in other work areas/institutions
