Situated in one of the UK’s best-connected and most culturally vibrant cities, the Department of History, Politics and Philosophy connects students and academics with the rich narratives and history of Manchester. The Department plays a leading role in co-productive methods of research, nurtures collaborations across disciplines, and delivers an outstanding student experience, which consistently receives over 90% satisfaction in NSS.
The Department combines an exciting mix of disciplines with research flagships such as the Manchester Centre for Public History and Heritage, and a breadth of high-quality programmes. The thriving community of researchers and academics consistently demonstrates the ways in which research enriches the academic experience of students.
The new Head of Department will forge and develop a wide range of strategic partnerships across disciplinary boundaries on behalf of the Department and University. They will be able to articulate a compelling direction for the Department and wider University that will leverage our existing strengths in teaching and research, support the continuous development of an internationally excellent profile, and enable us to extend our reach and impact to a range of diverse communities – locally, nationally and internationally.
This is an opportunity for a driven and visionary leader to contribute to a strong Department and play a prominent role in an institution with ambition, drive and impact. Successful candidates will have a passion for both research and education, a global outlook, and strong ambassadorial skills. They will bring collaborative leadership experience both within universities and externally, with a highly credible academic record and standing in teaching, research or knowledge exchange.
