The project “Cohesion in Europe - Perceptions and Fields of Action (PerzepEU)” investigates how cohesion is perceived in the EU and how it can be strengthened under conditions of high political and institutional heterogeneity. In four work packages, the project firstly examines the determinants of perception of cohesion in Europe, with a special focus on the perception of socio-economic factors; secondly, the role of different types of welfare states in the perception of cohesion; thirdly, in comparison with Canada, Switzerland and the U.S., the patterns of transfer mechanisms for cohesion in federal systems; and fourthly, in a practice-oriented work package, the different policy instruments for improving cohesion in and between EU member states. The project is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (subject to final approval).

The Hertie School is looking for a

Doctoral Researcher – Project on Social Cohesion in the EU (f/m/div)

on a part-time (26 hours/week) basis.

The contract shall commence as of 01 December 2020 and is limited to 36 months.

Your tasks:

  • Research as part of the working package on social and fiscal transfer mechanisms in multilevel systems with the aim of completing a PhD according to the regulations of the structured PhD Programme in Governance at the Hertie School under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Jachtenfuchs
  • Conduct research / expert interviews with relevant actors during extensive research stays in Canada, the U.S., Switzerland, Brussels, and Florence
  • Prepare scientific publications and conference presentations, coordinate with the other working packages of the project

Your profile:

  • Excellent academic track record and a completed graduate degree in political science or sociology
  • Solid training in social science methods
  • An excellent command of English; French and/or German is an advantage
