The Multiscale Fluid Mechanics Group (MFMG) is an acknowledged UK centre for fluid dynamics research, with regular international industrial and academic visitors, and forms a highly supportive local research environment for its postgraduate students. MFMG exists to explore the fundamental flow physics that facilitates new fluids technologies underpinning energy, sustainability, nanotechnology, health, and transport.

Currently, the Multiscale Fluid Mechanics Group offers one fully-funded PhD Scholarship for 3.5 years to develop a mesoscopic model to capture dynamical behavior of micro/nano droplets and bubbles which have a wide range of applications. For example, the material damage due to cavitation bubbles in the vicinity of a solid surface, which has recently been utilised to develop medical technology for non-thermal, non-invasive fractionation of tissue for treatment of a variety of diseases, and drug delivery. Evaporating droplets in cooling of nano-electronic circuits is another example.

In these applications, the conventional fluid mechanics theory may not be applicable. New model/approach will be required to allow us to understand these micro/nano-scale flow phenomena which are also difficult for experimental measurements. We will exploit the mesoscopic approach based on gas kinetic theory and lattice Boltzmann method. The student will work within an international research team, in close collaboration with industrial and academic partners, which aims to develop transformative modelling and computational platform to enable emerging technologies.

Eligibility: Minimum entry qualification - an Honours degree at 2:1 or above (or International equivalent) in a relevant science or engineering discipline, possibly supported by an MSc Degree. Further information on English language requirements for EU/Overseas applicants.

Applicants should have a 1st or 2:1 degree or equivalent in physics, applied mathematics, engineering, or related areas, with a background in fluid mechanics. International applicants are welcome if the additional overseas tuition fee can be self-funded.

Funding: Tuition fees + stipend are available for Home/EU students (International students can apply, but the funding only covers the Home/EU fee rate)
