About the team/job

The Ellenberg Group located at EMBL Heidelberg is seeking to recruit an highly motivated outstanding Research Scientist to join the lab.

The overall research aim of the Ellenberg Group is to systematically elucidate the mechanisms underlying cell division and nuclear organisation in mitosis and meiosis using advanced live cell microscopy techniques. Research work combines high-throughput and discovery approaches based on novel imaging methods with mechanistic hypothesis-driven projects.

Your role

As a Research Scientist you will work closely with Jan Ellenberg, Head of the Cell Biology and Biophysics Unit in supervision and management of research and technology development projects in his research group. You will support the planning and development of research projects, as well as fundraising, implementation and reporting of the projects. You will assist with the supervision and management of projects with researchers in the Ellenberg Group and their international collaborators. The position will also allow the candidate to actively carry out research, if desired.

In detail, tasks will include:

  • Assistance in supervision of research projects in the Ellenberg Group including in particular development and application of advanced light microscopy, cellular systems biology and mechanistic cell biology.
  • Close monitoring of project progress and preparation of decision points.
  • Planning, editing and submission of scientific manuscripts.
  • Identification of national and international funding opportunities, support planning, writing and submission of grant applications.
  • Scientific reporting including reports to funding agencies.
  • Communication of project results to external collaborators and at scientific meetings and conferences.
  • Developing and carrying out active research in the group’s interest areas, depending on the qualifications and interests of the candidate.

These activities will overall contribute to effective coordination of and between the different research projects and maximise synergies wherever possible. In addition, they will form the basis to apply for new funding for future projects based on current and new results and new technology developments. The candidate would therefore also closely communicate with EMBL’s grants services to identify new funding opportunities and other administrative departments as required.

You have

  • A PhD in natural sciences.
  • Ideally several years of research experience with a strong background in cell biology and advanced fluorescence microscopy in order to rapidly grasp the motivation and goals of the research projects in the Ellenberg group and its collaborators.
  • Experience in supervision and training of undergrads, pre- and/or postdoctoral fellows.
  • Experience in writing of scientific manuscripts and/or grant applications.
  • Excellent analytical and organisational skills and ability to work pro-actively across a broad range of functions in a dynamic, international and interdisciplinary environment.
  • Effective multi-tasking, attention to detail and the ability to work with tight deadlines.
  • Excellent scientific and managerial communication as well as interpersonal skills.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English including specialised scientific vocabulary.

You might also have

  • Research experience in the field of cell biology of the nucleus.
  • Experience in preparation and management of research grants on the national and/or European level.
