1. About Us
The Department of Philosophy of Sun Yat-sen University is one of the most prestigious centers for philosophical studies in the Southern China, it was founded in 1924 by a group of eminent scholars and philosophers such as Feng Youlan (Feng Yu-lan), Wu Kang, Zhu Qianzhi, Li Da etc. With the century-long development in philosophy research & teaching, it has now grown into an academic institution composed of over 100 faculty members and research fellows, with a wide spectrum of research fields as follows: Chinese Philosophy, Western Philosophy, Marxist Philosophy, Logic, Philosophy of Science, Ethics, Aesthetics and Religious Studies.
As one of the national philosophical research bases nominated by the Ministry of education, our department has been well-established in China and started to gain international recognition over the last decade. In 2017, the discipline of philosophy in our department was selected into the “first-class” construction list, on top of the “first-class” title granted to Sun Yat-sen University. In 2019, our department entered the top 100 of the global QS ranking for the discipline of philosophy. And in 2020, it was approved as the first batch of national first-class undergraduate professional education center by the Ministry of education.
Currently we have around 60 full-time teachers and 50 full-time researchers. Most of the faculty members have international academic background and published extensively on peer-reviewed journals in various languages. We are a community of colleagues with different nationalities but share the same passion for truth and knowledge. Whichever research group you may participate in, you will experience a real sense of academic enthusiasm within a supportive environment.
Applicants with the following background are welcomed: Marxist philosophy, Chinese philosophy, foreign philosophy, logic, philosophy of science and technology, ethics, religion, aesthetics and other related disciplines.
Have comparatively great academic potentials and achieved comparatively great research results by publishing no less than two outstanding academic works in principle; for those who have made particularly significant achievements, the number of their works could be reduced to one; be an outstanding doctoral student or postdoctor from a well-known domestic or international higher education institute or research institute.
