2-Year Post-Doc: Parasite metabolic adaptation in tissue colonization

Instituto de Medicina Molecular

Location: Lisbon - Portugal
Salary: Not Specified
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 21st October 2020
Closes: 10th December 2020

A 2-year Post-Doc contract is available to join Luisa Figueiredo laboratory at the Instituto de Medicina Molecular, in Lisbon. Funding is provided by the ERC (European Research Council).

We are looking for a highly motivated scientist, holding a PhD in life sciences, interested in metabolism and host-pathogen interactions. The adipose tissue is a major reservoir of African trypanosomes and parasites adapt to living in this tissue by activating fatty acid beta-oxidation (Trindade et al., Cell Host and Microbe, 2016). The goal of this project is to characterize the metabolic adaptation of trypanosomes to the tissue and understand its importance to disease progression in mouse models. Knowledge in biochemistry and metabolism is required.

Position is available from March 2021. The stipend will be determined according to the candidate’s experience. This project involves collaborations with other European laboratories (Austria, UK and France), which will provide opportunities for occasional traveling or short stays abroad.

Our laboratory is 10-years old and is currently composed of 11 researchers (1 Masters student, 5 PhD students, 5 Post-docs), of 4 different nationalities,  interested in African trypanosomes. We cover a diverse range of projects including different aspects of tissue tropism both from the parasite and host perspective, but we are also interested in regulation of gene expression by RNA modifications and lncRNAs. Over the years we have been funded by Howard Hughes Medical Institute, European Research Council, EMBO, La Caixa and FCT.

Applications should be submitted to Luisa Figueiredo ( and must include: a motivation letter, a short CV and contacts of two references. Letters of reference from qualifying candidates will be requested if necessary. Candidates should have first author publication(s) in peer-reviewed international scientific journals.

Closing date of this call: 10th December 2020.
