The School of European Languages and Cultures (SELC) of Beijing Foreign Studies University is a distinctive teaching and research unit. It offers courses in less commonly taught European languages, including programs at all levels (BA/MA/PhD). The school dates back to the Polish and Czech programs founded by Peking University in 1954. It was known as the Polish and Czech Department, the Polish, Czech and Romanian Department, and the Department of East European Languages in its different stages of development. On September 21, 2007, it was renamed School of European Languages and Cultures.
Currently, SELC has 25 programs for European languages, the largest number of its kind in China, including Polish, Czech, Romanian, Hungarian, Bulgarian, Albanian, Italian, Swedish, Finnish, Dutch, Slovak, Greek, Danish, Croatian, Serbian, Norwegian, Icelandic, Slovenian, Maltese, Estonian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Latin, Macedonian and Luxembourgish.
