The School of Art and Research is an advanced teaching and research institution established by Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) to conduct comprehensive research on Chinese art. It aims at promoting the development of Chinese art, fully displaying its essence, transmitting traditional Chinese culture, and creating a world-class comprehensive university. 

Known as the “cradle of diplomats,” Beijing Foreign Studies University attaches great importance to both the training in foreign language skills and the cultivation of students’ values in humanities and arts. The University’s teaching and research encompass Chinese culture to serve the need for increasing China’s soft power. To be qualified as diplomatic personnel, one must be well-informed and well-trained in such aspects as humanities, arts, politics and economics. In the new era, they also shoulder the historical mission of inheriting, promoting, and spreading China’s splendid traditional culture and art, as well as facilitating the construction of Chinese cultural soft power. Built upon the University’s strength in foreign language teaching, international studies, and cross-cultural researches, the School of Art and Research was founded on June 11, 2011, to produce the talents in need and develop the nation’s soft power.

The School of Art and Research aims at transmitting Chinese art to the rest of the world, and imparting basic theories and techniques of indigenous Chinese theatre, in particular, Jingju (Peking Opera), which is known as the “quintessence of the nation”. It addresses the need of students and teachers of Beijing Foreign Studies University, staff of foreign institutions in Beijing, and overseas volunteers of the Confucius Institute, creating a strong artistic atmosphere at the University. Covering a wide range of fields, the study of Chinese culture entails an array of research methodologies, and requires researchers to have profound knowledge in its cultural background and field experiences too. Undertaking the teaching, research and transmission of Chinese art with rigor and enthusiasm, the School is committed to giving full play to the advantages and characteristics of Chinese art, and building a new disciplinary system that is suitable for the development of Chinese art.
