The School of Russian Studies was founded in 1941. Its predecessor was the Russian Brigade of the Third Branch of the Yan'an Anti-Japanese Military and Political University, established in 1941. In 1949, the Russian Language Brigade became the Beijing Specialized School of Russian, and later, Beijing Russian Institute, in 1955. In 1959, Beijing Russian Institute and Beijing Foreign Studies Academy merged as the Beijing Foreign Studies Academy, which in turn was renamed Beijing Foreign Studies University in 1994. And two years later in 1996, the Russian Department was renamed the School of Russian Studies.

The School now boasts an array of research centers, including the Center of Russian Studies, the Center of Ukrainian Studies, and the Center of Kazakh Studies. It currently offers 8 majors including Russian, Ukrainian, Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Uzbek, Turkmen, Tajik, and Belarusian.

The research areas include Russian linguistics, Russian literature, Russian society and culture, translation (including consecutive interpretating and simultaneous interpretating), and Shanghai Cooperation Organization University Regional Studies.

By the end of August 2020, there are a total of 31 faculty members in the School, including 27 full-time teachers and 4 administrative staff. There are now 10 professors (including 4 doctoral supervisors), 8 associate professors, and 9 lecturers. Among all the teaching and administrative staff, 25 hold a doctoral degree. besides, three of the faculty members are foreign experts.

The School of Russian Studies is the first to set up the major in Russian across the country, with Russian Language and Literature being a first-level discipline for doctoral degree granting and Master’s degree granting.
