A postdoctoral position with competitive salary is available in the Aston Institute of Urban Technology and the Environment (ASTUTE) within the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences (EPS) at Aston University. The potential candidate will be skilled, enthusiastic and motivated, with a mathematical background, and has excellent interpersonal skills to work on an innovative research project funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).

This cutting-edge research project is entitled “Quantum Zealous Fully Probabilistic Framework for Anticipating and Controlling Quantum Systems”. The interaction of the quantum many-body dynamical systems with the external environment unavoidably introduces essential uncertainties, contextual dependency, and may change their outcomes. Along with the probabilistic nature of atomic-scale physical systems, and the effect of dissipation, has led to major challenges to control engineers and theorists, especially considering the irreversible character of the measurement.

The project aims to develop a coherent real-time probabilistic control framework that will build new tools to influence and control quantum systems that are operating under strong interactions and uncertainties, and balance coherent and dissipative dynamics.

The ideal candidate will bring a track record in analysis and application of control theory, quantum computing, optimization theory and control architecture development toward the design, modelling, and operation of next-generation quantum systems. Candidates should demonstrate leadership in performing advanced mathematics and algorithm development, as well as analytical and simulation studies. 

This is an exciting opportunity for a potential postdoc researcher to establish a long-term research presence working in a very exciting research area. The position will be for 18 months in the first instance and the researcher will be expected to work with Dr Herzallah to generate new funded projects.

The successful candidate will have a PhD, or near completion, in an area related to science as well as a first degree in a relevant branch of mathematics, physical sciences or control.  This position requires an experienced researcher who is likely to have advanced control and quantum theory expertise and a good recent publications record.
