The University of Glasgow and University of Strathclyde Announce the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Future Ultrasonic Engineering

Join the world’s largest academic ultrasonic engineering unit in 2021

Fully-funded 4-year PhDs and EngDs in Ultrasonic Engineering open for application until 31st January

Ultrasonics is the science and technology of sound at frequencies above the audible range. It is vitally important across many sectors from robotics in the oil and gas industry to medical imaging, where more than 9 million ultrasound scans are performed by the NHS in England every year. The universities of Glasgow and Strathclyde have combined research expertise across medical and industrial ultrasonic engineering to lead the Centre of Doctoral Training in Future Ultrasonic Engineering (FUSE), the largest academic ultrasonic engineering unit in the world.

Alongside over 20 ultrasonics academics, we are seeking up to 10 PhD and EngD students to join FUSE and work with 30 external organisations, from innovative micro-companies to exciting multinationals, on real projects, enabling systematic training of a new generation of leaders in ultrasonics research, engineering, and product development.

Programme and benefit

Our ambition is to create a training and research powerhouse in ultrasonics at the global forefront of the field.

Each cohort of students will benefit from:

  • A four-year stipend of approx. £15,245 per annum
  • A year’s foundation training and introduction to ultrasonic engineering
  • Industry speakers and visits introducing them to real-world problems and future employers
  • A three-year research project in collaboration with at least one of the CDT partners, which includes industries, NHS, and overseas universities
  • Opportunities to work with partners, or visit conferences, overseas
  • Professional skills development such as data management, time management, and communications

Key areas for applied ultrasonics include:

  • Medical and industrial imaging
  • Treatments and processes
  • Cleaning
  • Robotics
  • Sonar
  • Haptics
  • Energy transfer
  • Communications

The multiple needs of these varied sectors will be met by novel ultrasonics research in:

  • Materials
  • Microfabricated devices
  • Microelectronics
  • Instrumentation
  • Software and applications

Funding and eligibility

Funding is available to cover tuition fees for UK Home applicants and a stipend at the Research Council rate (£15,245 for Session 2020/21). To be eligible for a fully-funded UK Home studentship, you must be a UK citizen who has been resident in the UK for the past three years, or an EU applicant with ‘settled status’ (having lived in the UK for five years) or ‘pre-settled status’ (having lived in the UK for a minimum of three years). Candidates with indefinite leave to remain or enter the UK are also eligible for funding.

There are a limited number of international studentships available to exceptional candidates who do not meet the UK home status mentioned above.

Applicants must have or expect to obtain the equivalent of a 1st or 2.1 degree in an appropriate engineering or science discipline.

Due to COVID-19 all candidate interviews will be conducted by video conference. Successful offer holders that accept a FUSE studentship will be invited to visit FUSE CDT at University of Glasgow and the University of Strathclyde in due course.
