We offer an intensive, cross-disciplinary course of study on all aspects of history and culture between 300 and 1600 CE. Renowned faculty help you uncover and understand the past of Central and Western Europe, as well as the Byzantine, Slavic, Jewish, Arab and Ottoman worlds, in a global context. Our strong relationship with local universities and cultural institutions, on-site learning and field trip opportunities, internship program, source language courses and exhaustive library on all things medieval make us an ideal incubator for future scholars and professionals in and outside of academia. In addition to coursework at the Vienna campus, students may also take advantage of academic activities and resources available on CEU’s Budapest campus.
Earn a valuable degree
MA in Late Antique, Medieval and Early Modern Studies / 1 YEAR / This program is designed for students with a strong research agenda centered around late antique and medieval Latin, Slavonic, Byzantine or Ottoman culture and a solid grounding in medieval or early modern history or a bordering discipline, such as philology, literature, philosophy or archeology. You will master the latest research methodologies and enrich your research through the study of relevant source languages.
MA in Comparative History: Late Antique, Medieval and Renaissance Studies / 2 YEARS / Run jointly with CEU’s Department of History, the Medieval track of this program zooms in on the political, social, intellectual, religious and economic history as well as the material and spiritual culture of the period between 300 and 1600 CE. This training is best suited to students with a three-year bachelor’s degree in history or any other field in the humanities.
MA in Cultural Heritage Studies / 2 YEARS / Our program combines theoretical approaches to cultural heritage with practical knowledge through fieldwork and internships at heritage organizations. The result is hands-on, thorough academic training that prepares future heritage experts and practitioners with a critical understanding of the historical, social, policy and management aspects of tangible, intangible and environmental heritage.
Our faculty’s expertise crosses borders and disciplines. They include anthropologists specializing in African and American cultures, international heritage law experts as well as historians and archeologists with experience in European and Asian projects. Our students come from a variety of backgrounds, such as historical studies, creative and performing arts, architecture and urban development, sociology and management. They can choose from two streams of study: Academic Research and Protection of Cultural Heritage or Cultural Heritage Management and Policy.
Graduates typically find jobs at research bodies, governments, international organizations, heritage institutions and NGOs.
