The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is a world leader in scientific research and at the forefront in the development of cutting-edge technologies. In particular, exciting single cell genomic methods are revolutionising biological research. The field is advancing at a very rapid and exciting pace to measure multiple parameters from the same single cell (multi-omics) and to study cells in their native in-situ context (spatial-omics).

The GenTechDev team, together with John Marioni, Oliver Stegle and Anna Kreshuk are looking for a highly motivated computational scientist who loves to implement and develop computational solutions, and would like to expand their skills and knowledge regarding spatial-omics and image data analysis and visualization within a highly collaborative, interdisciplinary, cutting-edge environment. The successful candidate will join a dynamic team dedicated to developing widely accessible methods in single cell spatial-omics.

Your role

You will work together with a team of “wet lab” and computational scientists, who are developing spatial single cell approaches and other single cell genomic methods to advance research throughout EMBL. You will play a key role in the team by developing a wide range of computational analysis pipelines, spanning from experimental design (e.g. automatic probe generation) through to data analyses and visualization for methods such as Seq-FISH+.

The successful candidate is expected to be able to work independently, while being an excellent team player and be highly motivated and very well-organized, leveraging the computational expertise of the Marioni, Stegle and Kreshuk groups. As well as applying existing computational strategies, evidence of an ability to pioneer, robustly test and innovative analytical approaches would also be desirable.

You have

Applicants should have a Ph.D. (or equivalent experience) in computer science, mathematics or physics, or a Ph.D. biology with a proven track record in quantitative and computational modelling. Research experience in image and/or genomics data analyses in the biological life sciences is expected. You should have a proven track record in developing computational solutions for genomics or imaging data analysis and/or visualization. Excellent communication skills and the ability to drive your own work while collaborating within a team are essential. Fluency in English is mandatory.

You might also have

Experience with working with Python and optionally R is desirable. Additionally, evidence of generating sharable and well-documented code would be welcome. Expertise with single molecule imaging data analysis and visualization is a bonus.
