Senior Data Manager

University of Cambridge - MRC Epidemiology Unit

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Data Manager to take a leading role within the MRC Epidemiology Unit. The Unit is a department within the University of Cambridge's School of Clinical Medicine, and its research focuses on understanding the causes and helping to prevent obesity, type 2 diabetes and other metabolic disorders.

The Senior Data Manager will provide technical leadership to the work of the Unit alongside managing the Data Management Team. The work focuses on the collection, processing, distribution and management of data to support a varied portfolio of work (http://www.mrc-epid.cam.ac.uk/research/studies/). Database and programming techniques are used to develop and deploy custom databases, provide ongoing maintenance and carry out processing tasks such as data linkage, cleaning, verification and validation.  We have ambitious plans to enhance our methods for collecting data and for sharing and accessing data internationally.  The role will provide the necessary technical leadership for these new developments.

The successful candidate will be educated to degree level in a related subject area. Applicants will have experience in the development and implementation of relational databases and in the use of programming techniques for processing data and developing new tools. You will be able to lead a programming and data team and have confidence and clarity when communicating with staff and collaborators. A key requirement is the ability to deliver projects and contribute to the strategic alignment of the data functions with the future direction of new science. You need to be organised and work flexibly within a multi-functional team environment. In addition to planning and executing new strategic developments, you will need the necessary skills to manage the detail associated with day-to-day operations of managing large scale research data.

The role is an excellent opportunity to be part of an internationally renowned Unit working at the forefront of science and generating evidence to inform public health action. You will be able to work with leading technical specialists that carry out a broad range of functions to support the delivery of studies working within a dynamic and collaborative environment.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a basic disclosure (criminal records check) check, a security check and a standard Disclosure and Barring Service check.
