We are seeking a Research Associate to work on Oxford Net Zero, a new initiative drawing on the University’s world-leading expertise in climate science and policy, and the 4C H2020 project which is funding this position. The initiative will provide research and new resources for policymakers and businesses at this critical juncture for international action on climate change.

The successful candidate will work with project partners, in particular the University of Bern, collaborators in the Oxford e-Research Centre, and others in the Oxford Net Zero initiative, developing methodologies for continuous updating of information on the climate system response and remaining pathways to meeting ambitious mitigation goals, working to inform the Paris global stocktake regime. You will be responsible for the design, analysis and write-up of a core experiment using large-ensemble climate change simulations to model adaptive mitigation pathways under incomplete information. You will both act as the central source of expertise on the global carbon cycle for the Oxford Net Zero initiative and explore the implications of new scenarios and multi-polar governance regimes using both traditional IAMs and new modelling frameworks that more realistically represent the decision-making process. You will also be responsible for developing and maintaining our methodology for an independent stocktake of progress to net zero meeting Paris goals.

You must hold, or be close to completion of, a quantitative Doctoral degree in a quantitative discipline related to the physical climate system or equivalent experience. You will have modelling experience and willingness to engage in quantitative global carbon cycle modelling and analysis, including the design, implementation and analysis of large-ensemble simulations. Willingness to take responsibility for a regular stocktake process, combining information from, among others, partners in the 4C consortium and generating accessible outputs to meet external deadlines such as the UNFCCC COP timetable is essential. Experience and enthusiasm for publication in high-quality academic journals is a must.

This is a full-time post offered until 31 May 2023. While this is a full-time role we can support flexible working arrangements (for instance if you have caring responsibilities) in agreement with the Director.
