Assistant Professor of War, Peace and Justice 

Key responsibilities
Leiden University’s Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA) is inviting applications for a full-time Assistant Professor position of War, Peace and Justice. The successful candidate will have demonstrable research interests in issues and themes related to War, Peace and Justice as well as a strong teaching background in methods and research design as well as thematic topics related to the Institute’s BA and MA programme offerings. The position is aimed at strengthening the Institute’s teaching, publication, research and grant-acquisition capacities in a phase of rapid growth of student numbers and exciting interdisciplinary research opportunities. The successful applicant will be part of an ambitious and dynamically growing Institute and is expected to:

  • conduct independent and team-led research in the fields of War, Peace and Justice, broadly defined, including topics related to war studies, peacekeeping, peacebuilding and the responsibility to protect, national, European and international organizations’ approaches to peace and security, human rights and (global) justice; an interest in issues related to gender, peace and security is considered an asset;
  • support the ongoing development and implementation of the research strategy of ISGA by publishing in leading international outlets and by attracting research grants;
  • teach qualitative and quantitative methods courses (qualitative research design & analysis and research design);
  • teach in the BA and/or Minor and MA programmes as needed (BA in Security Studies, MSc in Crisis and Security Management, Minor in Global Affairs);
  • contribute to the development of new courses or programme offerings at BA, MA or executive training level;
  • contribute to the development of research groups and the Institute via administrative service (such as participating in committees related to the institute and its programmes);
  • supervise theses and capstone projects.

Selection criteria

  • PhD degree in Political Science, War Studies, International Relations, Peace and Conflict Studies, Security Studies or a closely related field;
  • Strong research qualities manifested in an established or developing publication record that includes publications in international peer-reviewed journals in areas related to war, peace and justice;
  • Demonstrable experience in and passion for research-led teaching;
  • Applicants must be able to teach in English;
  • Interest and ability to work in an interdisciplinary context;
  • Ability to connect academic research to policy-oriented impact;
  • Strong policy network in the area of international relations and international organization, security studies or global affairs;
  • Demonstrable commitment to the public and political debate related to core issues of security and global affairs.

Our organisation
The Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs, located in The Hague – the International City of Peace and Justice – offers a range of other programs focused on international relations, security, international law and international organization. It also hosts the Leiden University College (LUC), an international honors college of Leiden University situated The Hague. Firmly rooted in the academic tradition, the Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs provides an inspiring and challenging education and research environment, with a strong interdisciplinary character and international orientation; it is a meeting place for students, scholars and professionals, a platform for innovation and entrepreneurship.

The Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA) is a leading research and education institute, focusing on the most pressing local, national, European and global security issues from an interdisciplinary perspective. It currently hosts more than 100 academic and support staff members and offers the BA in Security Studies, the MSc in Crisis and Security Management, the Advanced MA in International Relations and Diplomacy, the executive MSc in Cyber Security as well as a variety of innovative teaching offerings in the professional and MOOC fields. In addition, ISGA runs popular Minor Programmes in Global Affairs, Security, Safety and Justice and Intelligence Studies as well as the Faculty’s Honour Programme in Security and Global Affairs.

Terms and conditions
We would prefer you to start by 1 August 2021 at the latest. The appointment will be under the terms of the Collective Labour Agreement (CAO) of Dutch Universities. The appointment will initially be for one year, with the possibility and intention to turn the position into a permanent one, based on funding and performance. The salary varies, depending on qualifications and experience, from  3.746,- to  5.127,- gross per month based on full-time employment  (pay scale 11 for Assistant professor).

Leiden University requires teaching staff to obtain the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ). If the successful applicant does not already possess this qualification or its equivalent, he/she must be willing to obtain this Qualification within two years.
