The appointed candidate will assume responsibilities in research and teaching in the field of applied statistics.
Appointment requirements are governed by Section 100 of the Berlin Higher Education Act (Berliner Hochschulgesetz).
The successful candidate will demonstrate a research focus in the area of applied statistics, ideally also in the field of survey statistics. They should have experience in statistical methods and analysis as applied to economics, preferably related to topics in the current main research fields of the Institute for Economics. The successful candidate will demonstrate an outstanding research record, ideally including international activities, and should have experience in acquiring and leading externally funded research projects. Proof of successful teaching at the university level is required; teaching experience in an international context is also desirable. Candidates must have excellent knowledge of German or English and be able to teach in the respective language. Ideally, they should also demonstrate experience in statistics advising.
Along with the regular official duties of professors listed in Article 99 of the Berlin Higher Education Act, we expect the appointee to engage in the following activities:
The appointee will lead and develop fu:stat, the statistics advising unit at Freie Universität Berlin. They will teach at bachelor’s and master’s level in the School of Business and Economics, with special responsibility for the master’s degrees Master of Economics and Master of Public Economics. They will also participate in teaching and supervision within the structured doctoral programs offered by the Berlin School of Economics.
The successful candidate will help develop the curriculum for the master’s degree program in statistics offered jointly by Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Freie Universität Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin, and Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, especially in expanding teaching in survey statistics. They shall participate in the development of a new Berlin-wide master’s degree in data science within the Berlin University Alliance, and continue to contribute to the Institute’s involvement in the European Master in Official Statistics (EMOS).
The new professor will be expected to publish their research in highly ranked, internationally recognized professional journals and to engage in the acquisition of third-party funding. As the appointee is expected to offer courses in German and English, candidates must have a keen interest in acquiring the adequate language skills within an appropriate period from the date of employment. The new professor will also be expected to address gender and diversity issues in their research and teaching activities.
