About the team/job
The research group of Lars Steinmetz seeks for an ambitious research technician to support our work on CRISPR/Cas9 based genetic screening in human cell line model systems.
The research technician will develop and optimize next generation sequencing and CRISPR/Cas9 technologies to elucidate the functions and mechanisms of transcription, and molecular systems underlying diseases.
Your responsibilities will further include:
Applicants should have an appropriate University degree or equivalent certificate from a technical training college in a relevant scientific subject.
The successful candidate will be familiar with the biological mechanisms underlying gene expression.
(S)he will have hands-on experience in human cell culture model systems including handling of cells and CRISPR/Cas9 genome engineering.
Experience in iPSCs is highly desirable.
The appointed candidate will be capable of working independently, but also enjoy being part of an interdisciplinary team of young scientists within a highly collaborative international atmosphere.
Excellent communication skills and fluency in written and verbal English are essential.

Why join us
This is a fantastic opportunity to work in a team at the cutting edge of technology development in a very exciting area at a world leading institute. EMBL, Europe’s flagship laboratory for the life sciences, is an intergovernmental research institute with more than 80 independent research groups across six sites in Europe. We are an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation with a very collegial and family friendly working environment. The remuneration package comprises a competitive salary, a comprehensive pension scheme, medical, educational and other social benefits.
The Steinmetz Lab works across two sites at EMBL Heidelberg and Stanford University and is one of the world’s leading labs in technology development for functional genomics, by combining experimental work and bioinformatics. The successful applicant will also work in close collaboration with our industry partners at GSK/Cellzome, a centre of excellence for Omics technologies of GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), at the EMBL campus in Heidelberg.
What else you need to know
We are Europe’s flagship research laboratory for the life sciences – an intergovernmental organisation performing scientific research in disciplines including molecular biology, physics, chemistry and computer science. We are an international, innovative and interdisciplinary laboratory with more than 1700 employees from many nations, operating across six sites, in Heidelberg (HQ), Barcelona, Hinxton near Cambridge, Hamburg, Grenoble and Rome.
Our mission is to offer vital services in training scientists, students and visitors at all levels; to develop new instruments and methods in the life sciences and actively engage in technology transfer activities, and to integrate European life science research.
Please note that appointments on fixed term contracts can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of the review.
