We are seeking a Senior Bioinformatician/Computational Bioscientist to join an established multi-disciplinary team as part of the Modernising Medical Microbiology (MMM) consortium.
As a Senior Scientist, you will take a leadership role to contribute computational biology and bioinformatics expertise for the NIHR Oxford Biomedical Research Centre (OxBRC) Modernising Microbiology and Antimicrobial Resistance Theme and the MMM group as part of a team of bioinformaticians.
You will be responsible for delivery of specific tasks relating to project deliverables. These include collaborating in the ongoing development of scalable platforms for storing, analysing and exchanging clinical and genetic data, participating in currently implemented algorithms for mapping, assembling and analysing pathogen molecular variation; this might include development of novel bioinformatics tools for pathogen genomes such as SARS-CoV-2. You will contribute to developing and implementing efficient algorithms for querying WGS data to predict gene content (including plasmids, virulence factors and antimicrobial resistance) and transmission relationships; and integrating WGS and epidemiology data into schemes for large-scale association studies and surveillance. You will take initiative in the design, development, implementation and maintenance of novel bioinformatics algorithms to address clinically relevant questions from both short and long read WGS data and lead on software changes and implementation in existing workflows. You will also undertake a supervisory role for new members of the bioinformatics team ensuring that they are familiar with current informatics methods within the group.
You will hold a PhD (or equivalent experience) in bioinformatics/computational biology, genomics, evolutionary biology or a related subject. You will have excellent computational skills with experience in large-scale bioinformatics analysis of sequence data, and experience with scripting and/or programming for bioinformatics. You will have experience in supervision of PhD students and/or staff and demonstrable ability to work successfully with researchers from different disciplines.
The post is full time and fixed-term for 24 months.
