Assistant Professor: 29,046 – 31,993 RMB/month (with the opportunity to go to 35,588RMB/month based on future annual performance and evaluations after being in post);

Associate Professor: 36,127 – 38,967 RMB/month (with the opportunity to go to 42,705 RMB/month based on future annual performance and evaluations after being in post);

Senior Associate Professor: 43,353 – 45,941 RMB/month (with the opportunity to go to 49,319 RMB/month based on future annual performance and evaluations after being in post);

The Department of Applied Linguistics is a research-intensive environment with two MA programmes, which also contributes a Linguistics pathway on four UG programmes. We are also currently developing a Applied Linguistics Research Laboratory.

The Department of Applied Linguistics seeks a dynamic and enthusiastic Assistant/Associate Professor with a specialism in Applied Linguistics and an excellent track record of research relative to their experience. Expertise in the areas of first language acquisition, second language acquisition, and/or TESOL would be an advantage.


The appointee will be expected to contribute to the department’s research profile. The successful candidate will also be expected to deliver lectures and seminars in topics in Applied Linguistics and TESOL, and to supervise PhD students. Our MA TESOL degree provides students with the opportunity to develop both a scholarly and practical understanding of the field of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). Candidates should have the ability to teach at least four of the following modules: Linguistics for Language Teachers, Methods in English Language Teaching, Principles of Course and Materials Design, Second Language Acquisition, Language Testing and Assessment, Speaking and Listening, and Research Methods. A willingness to develop a Child Language Acquisition module at the UG or PG levels would be an advantage. A contribution to academic administration will also be expected.

  • A PhD in Applied Linguistics or a related area is essential.
  • Experience of teaching TESOL or Applied Linguistics in a Higher Education setting is desirable.
  • A strong record of research appropriate to stage of career is essential.
  • Teaching experience at postgraduate level is desirable.
  • Teacher training experience and/or language teacher management is desirable.
  • Experience of Technology Enhanced Learning is desirable.


Members of Academic Staff are entitled to subsidies for accommodation, travel, and children’s educational, medical insurance, and a one-time relocation allowance is provided. Overseas staff may receive a tax “holiday,” depending on nationality and personal circumstances.


Employment at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University is regulated by Chinese Labour Laws, and must comply with the regulations of the provincial government.
