COSMIC Scientific Communications Manager

The Opportunity:

COSMIC are seeking a communications specialist to create and drive a scientific communications strategy to define a vital information resource in human cancer research, globally.

About Us:

COSMIC is the key information source in human cancer research worldwide and the world's largest source of expert manually curated somatic mutation information, which is growing rapidly in content, scope and its value. Data is currently gathered from a variety of sources, from manual curation to structured repositories and standardised into the COSMIC database before release via our analytic website. This genetic and genomic data is increasing in quantity and scope and underpins/supports vital and cutting edge research in both academic and commercial drug discovery, biotechnology and laboratory work worldwide.

About the Role:

You will lead a scientific communications strategy highlighting the utility and excellence of COSMIC and its world-renowned product portfolio of high quality oncology information. You will deliver compelling and dynamic scientific content using a wide range of media (video content, blogs, Linked In, Twitter) and engaging user communications (including coherent updates on releases for the external website).  The aim being to efficiently integrate the communication plan with COSMIC business strategy, product roadmap and product development.  

About You:

You will have exceptional written communication skills and a talent for researching and developing engaging content as well as communicating complex scientific stories to an expert audience worldwide. You will have the ability to understand the goals and aims of the collaborative COSMIC team and its customers of researchers, scientists and clinicians. You will have an efficient, organised and consistent approach to managing competing demands and be able to use this skillset to balance strict deadlines for internal and external stakeholders.

Essential Skills

  • Experience in producing engaging content to broad scientific audiences via multiple channels (such as social media and digital marketing management including Twitter, Linked In, Blog Posts, as well as traditional scientific publication/abstracts & trade press).  
  • Knowledge of genomics and/or bioinformatics 
  • Degree in a Life Science subject which incorporates knowledge genetic/genomic sciences 
  • Excellent communication ability including written and oral skills 
  • Demonstrate ability to influence and negotiate with managers at all levels as well as external and internal stakeholders
  • Interacting flexibly and positively in a diverse group, always seeking to increase inclusion of differing cultures in global communications 
  • Strong information gathering and problem solving skills 

Ideal Skills

  • Experience of working in a commercial environment 
  • Previous experience of SEO optimisation 
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects, working under pressure with high volume workload and conflicting priorities 
  • Experience with biological databases or similar software platforms/tools in scientific data and/or scientific research environment
