MTU Cork School of Music (CSM), founded in 1878, is the oldest and largest conservatoire of music and drama in Ireland, with over 450 full-time students on its performing arts degree courses, and a further 2,000 students undertaking part-time conservatoire study. CSM is the leading conservatoire for music and drama in Ireland and prides itself on the holistic nature of its music and drama education, delivering career-focused programmes and equipping students with the skills required for success in the music and theatre industry. CSM is situated in the heart of Cork City centre, close to all the major arts venues and hosts approximately 400 performing events annually. The purpose-built and state-of-the-art building features a 385-seat concert hall, 110 seat theatre, 52 teaching and practice studios, a full recording studio and suite, 60 Steinway grand pianos, lecture theatres, 2 audio labs, an IT lab, and the Off-Quay Bistro.

The Head of MTU Cork School of Music (CSM) is a Senior Lecturer Grade III post within the University. The Head of CSM will be responsible for the strategic development of CSM as a modern Conservatoire within the new Technological University context, as well as providing overall management and administration of CSM. The Head of CSM will represent the interests of CSM at regional, national and international level.

The Head of School currently reports to the Head of Faculty of Business & Humanities.

The Head of School leads the School Executive Board, comprising Heads of Department/Senior Staff in the Departments of

  • Keyboard Studies
  • Orchestral Studies
  • Pop, Jazz, Trad, Voice & Theatre Studies
  • Musicianship and Academic Studies

The Head of School also liaises with the Facility Management Company, responsible for the CSM building as part of a public-private partnership, regarding operational and client-liaison matters.

Qualification Requirements for role:

Minimum Qualifications

  1. a relevant primary honours degree with First or Second-Class Honours from a recognised degree awarding authority or equivalent relevant professional qualification obtained through examination.
  2. proven, appropriate post qualification experience.

Desirable Qualifications

  1. a post graduate qualification at Doctorate Level;
  2. Experience of management in higher education and/or conservatory education as well as organisational, leadership, strategic planning and communication skills and experience.

Salary Scale:

€86,829.00 to €110,921.00 per annum.
