About the team/job

EMBL is seeking to recruit a Lab Manager in the Structural and Computational Biology Unit at EMBL Heidelberg. The position is available in the group of the Head of the Unit, Dr. Christoph W. Müller. Interests of the group are mechanisms of transcriptional regulation in eukaryotes. A particular focus of the group is the structural biology of transcription complexes. The group uses cryo-EM as principal technique combined with other structural, biochemical and biophysical approaches. The Lab Manager will be involved in the production, biochemical and biophysical characterization of proteins and protein complexes, as well as the overall organization of the laboratory. 

Your role

The Lab Manager will provide support in management and organization of the group of the Head of the SCB Unit and in addition will support the wet-lab activities of the Unit

Scientific Research

  • Participation in ongoing scientific projects involving cloning, protein expression in bacteria, insect and mammalian cell lines, protein purification, biochemical and biophysical characterization of proteins and protein complexes.
  • Testing of new experimental approaches and projects in their start-up phase.

Supervision and Lab management

  • Training of new group members and visitors in technologies and protocols used in the laboratory.
  • General laboratory management, such as administration of reagent databases, ordering, instrument maintenance and scheduling.
  • Interface with EMBL's service departments including building maintenance, scientific instrument maintenance, workshops, core facilities.

Unit management

  • Regular meetings and communication with all wet-lab technicians of the Unit for the coordination of the wet-lab activities of the unit.
  • General department management, including common equipment ordering, common space organization and planning for remodeling projects.

You have

  • Experience as a research technician/research scientist with relevant education and strong expertise in molecular biology and biochemistry.
  • Broad technical, organizational, interpersonal and management skills and exceptional reliability.
  • Fluency in English and good working knowledge in German are essential.
