This exciting self-funded PhD opportunity is in the area of computer vision and artificial intelligence to investigate human behaviour and analysis through advanced deep learning algorithms.

Humans, as individuals or groups, respond to internal and external stimuli throughout their lives. This behaviour is influenced and developed by psychological aspects of the person(s). Human behavioural analysis focuses on the way humans react and interact within a particular ecological context. Computer vision is extending the boundaries of science and engineering and the development of advanced Artificial Intelligence based algorithms allow manipulation of data obtained through computer vision based systems to analyse problems and conclude results. Vision based intelligent system are being developed for facial expression and body language analysis. In this research, the student will be able to work with a team of scientists from various areas including psychologists to use computer vision based data and develop intelligent algorithms to analyse human behaviour.

Safety and security of crowded places is becoming a major concern with the responsible authorities such as airports, train stations etc. The analysis of human behaviour, individual/groups, and ability to predict behaviour can provide vital information in such places and thus can contribute to safety and sustainability. The focus of this research is on computer vision and artificial intelligence where deep learning will be employed to design vision based intelligent/autonomous systems with advanced algorithms and system integration with multiple sensors for better prediction of human behaviour and decision making.

The aim of the project is to understand the human psychology where you will be supported by professional psychologists. This understanding will be used to develop AI based deep learning algorithms that can analyse the behaviour from facial expressions and body language. The project will focus on a computer vision based approach.

This project will develop cutting-edge technologies that can become a vital part of the safety and security of national assets and thus providing a sustainable solution to the growing threats to such places and people.

The student will be a member of the Centre for Computational Engineering Sciences and will be based at the DARTeC which is a £65 million new research centre focused on the “Aviation of Future”. Cranfield and its partners have collaborated to install state-of-the-art sensor technology across DARTeC which will be extensively utilised for this project. Cranfield is also setting up 16 km long national facility for drone flights (referred to as drone corridor). The student will have the opportunity to spend time with our partners and learn from the professionals working on the development of cutting edge technologies. The student will be able to share their research through conferences and journal publications.

This is a very exciting project for a suitable candidate where they will be exposed to the latest technological developments, learn from the industrial and academic experts working in this area, and prepared for an exciting career in academia or industry.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should have a first or second class UK honours degree or equivalent in a related discipline. This project would suit a candidate with experience in computer vision and artificial intelligence.

This is a self-funded project. Cranfield University will cover the costs of travel for business, attendance to conferences and journal publications.
