Postdoctoral Training Fellow

The Francis Crick Institute

Contract: Fixed-term, 4 years

As part of a Crick-GSK LinkLabs collaboration, we are seeking an enthusiastic postdoctoral researcher to be based in the Proteomics - Scientific Technology Platform (STP) at the Francis Crick Institute. The postdoc will design develop and implement cutting-edge mass spectrometry methods with a focus on the development of high-throughput chemoproteomic workflows to enable profiling of reactive covalent fragment interactions in cells. This exciting collaborative postdoctoral project will provide further training in an integrated academia-industry setting that combines the skills and expertise of scientists in the Crick with those in GSK. Project work will be conducted in Mark Skehel’s Proteomics platform at the Crick, and when required at GSK’s R&D centre in Stevenage.

The successful candidate will be part of a dynamic, multi-disciplinary team working to combine mass spectrometry, next generation chemistry and cutting-edge genomics with machine learning technologies to accelerate the selection of new drug targets.

Postdoctoral Training Fellows are expected to lead their own projects, contribute to other projects on a collaborative basis and guide PhD students in their research. This is a multi-faceted project with a strongly interdisciplinary focus. The project will be co-supervised by Crick and GSK scientists and has considerable scope to evolve.

Project scope

This Crick–GSK LinkLabs collaboration is aimed at developing a Systems Chemical Biology platform to enable simultaneous identification of disease-associated proteins and functional chemical probes. The project is funded by an EPSRC Prosperity Partnership award that brings together multiple research groups at the Crick and GSK to pioneer reactive fragments and high-content screening technologies in cells (https://www.crick.ac.uk/news/2021-04-02_francis-crick-institute-and-gsk-to-pioneer-reactive-fragment-screening-in-drug-discovery and https://www.crick.ac.uk/news/2019-02-08_benefits-of-moving-in-together).

Key experience and competencies

The successful candidate can expect an excellent training in biological mass spectrometry as well as the opportunity to collaborate with and learn from GSK and Crick experts working in other disciplines; particularly, computational chemistry, structural biology, cell biology, biochemistry and medicinal chemistry.

Essential

Qualifications, experience and competencies:

  • A PhD or about to obtain a PhD in mass spectrometry, proteomics, bioanalytical chemistry or related discipline.
  • Experience with either the Thermo Scientific Orbitrap Tribrid platform or Bruker timsTOF Pro.
  • Familiarity with data analysis software such as Mascot, Proteome Discoverer, PEAKS, MaxQuant, Spectronaut and Skyline.
  • Strong commitment to work closely with proteomic specialists, data scientists, structural biologists and cell biologists.
  • Ability to work confidently and independently, approaching research problems with initiative and flexibility.
  • Eagerness to embrace the highly collaborative culture between GSK and the Crick.
  • Excellent communication skills, record keeping and time management.

Desirable

Qualifications, experience and competencies:

  • Set up and operation of automation and liquid handling for high throughput sample preparation techniques.
  • Ability to digest and clearly present highly technical information to other scientists, including experts in the field.
  • Experience in applying analytical approaches to interrogate complex datasets and generate hypotheses.
  • A track record of high productivity in mass spectrometry/proteomics, supported by publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Experience with maintaining nanoLC, Orbitrap or Q-TOF instrumentation.
  • Familiarity with a range of advanced proteomic workflows and techniques (SILAC, TMT, DIA, PTM enrichment etc).
