Deputy Head Nurse

The Dick Vet Equine Hospital is looking for a second Deputy Head Nurse to join our busy referral hospital. The post holder will work closely with our existing Deputy to provide a high-level of managerial and nursing support to the Equine Head Nurse and will work alongside our friendly team of seven nurses. 

The Opportunity: 

The candidate will provide first-rate professional nursing care to the medical and surgical patients within the equine hospital. They will provide a high standard of client care and contribute to the continuous improvement across our referral services. This includes the efficient processing of financial transactions e.g. billing and invoicing procedures, management of equipment, stock control, monitoring first opinion practice requirements and standards, the creation and development of practice protocols and the responsibility for ensuring health and safety guidelines are in place and adhered to. The Deputy Head Equine Nurse will be responsible and accountable for managerial/operational duties that require significant experience of a hospital nursing environment.

The position is full time, 35 hours/week, however flexible working or part-time hours will be considered. The candidate will participate in a shared out-of-hours rota to provide nursing support for hospital patients, including those under emergency care.

Your skills and attributes for success:

  • Qualified Registered Veterinary Nurse with significant experience in equine hospital based practice 
  • A confident horse handler
  • Working knowledge of pharmacy management and stock control
  • Evidence of good time management and organisational skills with an ability to assist in logistical planning  
  • Excellent communication skills with a desire to teach and be a team player
