Swansea University Medical School (SUMS) is a leading UK medical school. Offering a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, the medical school is ranked 1st in the UK for research environment, and 2nd for overall research quality, based on 2014 REF data. We educate and train tomorrow’s doctors and life scientists, offering an interdisciplinary approach to translational medicine. Our Research portfolio is organised into 4 research themes with successful research areas embedded in each. The research activities are housed across 5 campus buildings including wet lab facilities (the Institute of Life Sciences, The Grove building and the Centre for Nanohealth), health services research facilities (institute of Life Science 2) and health data research (Datascience building). Funding (totalling £15m per year) comes from Horizon 2020 EU programme, MRC, BBSRC, NIHR, Health and Care Research Wales, Medical Charities and industrial bodies.

The post seeks to appoint an enthusiastic teaching focussed individual with specialisation in the field of biochemistry and/or related subjects to provide a sustained contribution to Welsh language undergraduate teaching and supervision across the Medical School, in addition to sharing some organisational and academic administrative responsibilities.

The successful candidate will;

  • Teach as a member of a teaching team in a developing capacity within an established programme of study in a variety of settings from small group tutorials to lectures. Transfer knowledge in the form of practical skills, methods and techniques with the assistance of a mentor if required, challenge thinking, foster debate and develop the ability of students to engage in critical discourse and rational thinking.
  • With support, develop own teaching materials, methods and approaches and select appropriate assessment instruments and criteria; seek ways of improving performance by reflecting on teaching design and delivery and obtaining and analysing feedback. Reflect on practice and the development of own teaching and learning skills
  • Identify the learning needs of students and define appropriate learning objectives and give constructive feedback to students as required, provide advice on study skills and assist with learning problems

The successful candidate will have;

  • A first degree in a relevant subject area or equivalent relevant professional experience or qualification
  • Evidence of preparing and delivering teaching material at undergraduate level and contribute to existing modules at other levels of study in the Welsh language.
  • Recognised teaching qualification or equivalent or a commitment to achieve this.
  • An ability to work with VLEs in relation to undergraduate teaching alongside online teaching aids such as Peerwise, Kahoot etc.
  • Evidence of previous experience as an academic mentor / tutor of undergraduate students and/or provision/ involvement in final year research projects for undergraduate or masters degrees
